Setting up support groups for patients with chronic or long-term illnesses

There were many questions about the technicalities of setting up such groups, such as

There are a number of local activities that might be interesting or beneficial to people in poor health. LMS wondered if the parish council might hold some kind of master list. PD suggested that perhaps the Committee should put together such a list.

Action: CS will find out about activities held in the Bar Hill Church and DoH will go through the Bar Hill News looking for items. LMS will put together a leaflet which then can be displayed at the surgery and perhaps other places in the village, such as the library and parish council office.

As far as organising support groups, LMS thought that perhaps the surgery might want to canvas the patients to find out if they have any interest. If there is sufficient interest, then an organisational meeting could take place, much like the beginnings of the patient participation group. JP was worried that a group consisting of only the sick might be depressing and CS agreed. PD warned that such a group could all too easily turn into a 'moan and groan' group rather than something truly beneficial.

Scheduling of guest speaker from Primary Care Research Network

Action: Jennie Moyes is making the arrangements, probably for either the September or October meeting.

Surgery report

The current contract for maple surgery running the primary care services at the Bar Hill Health Centre runs out next April. DrSS said that the tendering process for the running of the surgery was already under way. DaH asked what the focus of the Committee's letter to our local MP, Andrew Lansley, should be, since the tendering process is a given and cannot be altered. EC wanted to know what else the Committee could do to support maple surgery in this matter. DrSS said the main concern always had to be patient welfare and the tendering process not only interrupts continuity of care, but goes against the very ethos of general practice.

Action: DrSS will have Trish Hawitt Palmer send the most recent GP survey results to DaH. Any comparisons in results should be made against the previous practice holders, with the cross-over year being 2009/2010.

New business

Village fête

CS said that this was the first time in its history that the fête had been cancelled. It is unlikely to be rescheduled for later in the summer.

Acting Chairman for August meeting

Action: DoH will act as Chairman for the August meeting.
